Benjamin Daniel Brainard was born July 11th, 2011 at 7:59 am. He weighed 6 lbs. 5 oz. and measured 18.5 inches long. Aunt Heidi and Cousin Hannah came all the way from Durham, NC to be here for the big day. David got to show off his new swimming abilities and have fun with Aunt Heidi while Mommy and Daddy were at the hospital. Here’s a short video of our celebration of the arrival of Benjamin Daniel Brainard…

The meaning of the Name

At church, the Sunday before Benjamin was born, some friends prayed for us and for our new son. As they did, Nancy wept. And Norine, one of our dear friends, wept with us as she and her husband, Dean, prayed. Nancy later shared with me that the Lord had impressed upon her the story of Hezekiah (the repairer of the broken down walls). My first thought was that the Lord may want us to name our son Hezekiah. But as we prayed, we began to sense that this was the story that God intended to be the backdrop for Benjamin’s journey. So we thought, “…what about Benjamin?” Then, Nancy read the story. As we read story, the part about Joseph having to leave because he had to weep, we began to sense that here was our connection. Benjamin was the tool that God used to soften the heart of Joseph toward his brothers. Benjamin was a tool in God’s hand to serve as a repairer of the breach between Joseph and his brothers. And now “Benjamin,” our Benjamin will be prepared by God’s grace to serve the Lord’s desires to restore and repair the things that are broken down.

David (big brother) was born into the 07 ice storm that most Tulsans will never forget. Benjamin was born into extreme heat… one of the hottest weeks on record. The book of Daniel records the story of three men who walked in the fire with the Lord. Benjamin’s middle name is Daniel, because God will prepare him to walk with the Lord through fire.
